Singer Miguel Shows Us His Gym and Fridge

Singer Miguel’s fitness journey began with a bit of stage fright—or rather, the fright of touring and sharing the stage with Trey Songz. “This dude’s always been super fit,” says Miguel. “I was determined to not look like the scrawny dude on tour.” So determined, in fact, he spent six months prepping for his on stage physique. He now works out a little less (only five times a week!).

Welcome to the second episode of Gym and Fridge—a series where we invade celebrity homes, check out their exercise equipment and poke around their freezers.

This week we’re in LA with singer/songwriter Miguel and his “house of gains,” where the gym isn’t in the garage; the gym is the garage. That on-location fitness spot was created almost as soon as Miguel and his wife, Nazanin Mandi, moved in. The couple takes turns using the space, with Miguel waking up first (around 6 a.m.) to meditate and then meet his trainer for for an early session that starts on a rowing machine and moves to kettlebells, Miguel’s favorite piece of gym equipment.

When he’s on the road, workouts are lightweight, full body, and often include rope work to help with diaphragm control. “I like doing ropes and singing at the same time,” says Miguel. Singing while battle roping? Damn.

As for food, when he’s not in the middle of an intermittent fasting period, Miguel keeps it light.

"We cleaned this out to make sure it didn’t look too crazy,” laughs Miguel as he throws open his fridge to the sight of salsa shelfs, avocado drawers, and lime doors.“We’re Latino, and so you gotta have lemons and limes in the house … at all times.”

The singer says he tries to stay as close to a keto diet as he can. But those those goodies in the freezer tell another story. “This is not really my area [of the fridge],” says Miguel. Okay, buddy, whatever you say.
