Trader Joe’s is known for its amazing products, like keto-friendly snacks and this tasty cinnamon croissant loaf . But what if the amazing grocery could also help you make $30,000 in just one year? Well that’s just what one Los Angeles couple did when they began reselling Trader Joe’s items on Amazon.
Juston and Kristen Herbert say that they made about $30k from reselling Trader Joe’s famous "Everything But The Bagel seasoning" online. As The Kitchn reports, in a now-deleted YouTube video, the couple posted how they would go to different Trader Joe’s stores and buy a couple cases of the seasoning from each store.
They would then post the seasoning on Amazon. The seasoning is sold at Trader Joe’s for $1.99, so if the Herberts were selling the a bottle of seasoning for $6.75, that would get them an 80-cent profit. Sell 100 units a day? That would get to you to about $30,000 a year.
The Herberts also resell items from other stores like Lowe’s, the 99 Cent store, and Walmart, and they detail the process on their YouTube channel, Flipping Profits .
While this may seem a little weird, this kind of venture, called retail arbitrage, is totally legal. The first sale doctrine copyright law states that, "an individual who knowingly purchases a copy of a copyrighted work from the copyright holder receives the right to sell, display or otherwise dispose of that particular copy , notwithstanding the interests of the copyright owner."
However, when reached for comment by The Kitchn , Trader Joe’s said that, "our products work the best when they’re sold as part of the overall customer experience within our stores…We do not authorize the reselling of our products and cannot stand behind the quality, safety or value of any Trader Joe’s product sold outside of our store."
