With the ever increasing popularity of the Keto diet over the last few years, you’d have thought that the last wellness trend we’d see surfacing in 2019 would be one focussed on a white, starchy carb.
However, times are changing. With experts slamming the keto diet for its side effects and fitness influencers like Kayla Itsines declaring their love for bread , now seems like the perfect time for the rise and rise of another deliciously beige carb – the white potato.
A good source of vitamins C and B6, as well as folate, potassium and magnesium amongst other things, white potatoes are also low in FODMAPs (the pesky molecules that trigger IBS symptoms like an upset stomach, bloating and gas).
“For the money and your blood pressure, you can’t beat a traditional baked spud,” says Joan Salge Blake, a clinical nutrition professor at Boston University.
White potatoes and wellness isn’t a new phenomenon. In 2017 a man from Victoria made headlines after losing 50kg when eating potatoes for breakfast, lunch and tea for 365 days (yes, really). But the idea of white potatoes as 2019’s latest wellness trend was first floated by Harling Ross of New York based site Man Repeller .
Ross was informed by a friend, “the wellness community is starting to pay more and more attention to digestion, and white potatoes are one of the easiest things to digest” which prompted a delve by the journalist into the dietary benefits of the white potato.
Australian Popular Science reports white potatoes do contain all the essential amino acids you need to build proteins, repair cells, and fight diseases.
However, the publication also warns that white potatoes contain a carbohydrate that causes blood sugar to spike and then dip, which in turn puts a strain on the insulin system.
Like most foods, it’s best to eat potatoes as part of a balanced diet that also contains, amongst other things, fibre, lean protein and healthy fats. But with sweet potato also making lists as a hot new health trend for 2019, it’s safe to say that no one will be putting baked potatoes in the corner again anytime soon.
